How to use a portable urinal in bed, step by step

A bedside urinal only helps if using it feels simple at 3 a.m. Here is how the people who use ours every night set it up.

1. Set the bottle where the hand falls

   Hang the bottle on the bed rail by its handle or stand it on the floor at hip height. With a long-hose model, the bottle can sit below the mattress so gravity does the work.

2. Position before you start

   Men: lie on the side or sit on the edge of the bed, place the funnel and keep the hose running downhill. Women: use the female adapter, press it gently against the body and keep the knees slightly apart.

3. Let it flow, then seal

   The spill-proof valve and lid stop backflow if the bottle tips. Close the lid before you lie back down.

4. Empty in the morning

   Unscrew the outlet or lid, empty into the toilet, and rinse with warm water. Our soft-funnel models have a separate outlet so the funnel never has to come off.

5. Wash daily, dry upside down

   Mild soap and a bottle brush once a day; a vinegar rinse once a week keeps odor away. Replace the hose when it clouds or stiffens.
